Chapter TenâAnnabelle
Clive never held my hand or kissed me. He had no affection left for me. Not one iota. We had three children, a beautiful home, a reputable name. None of that mattered to him and his love, which had been questionable to begin with was nonexistent.
As always, he was merely an extension of his father and since his father kindly informed my husband of our brief but passionate past together, Clive hated me. Although he hated me, Clive continued to do Richardâs bidding in all things. He ran the cotton mill with precision, attended all the required business and social functions with charm and charisma. Yet, when we were alone, no words passed between us. No love shared. Now that Cliveâs love was absent from my life, I longed for it as hungrily as I ever hungered for Richard.
Only when happiness was in my grasp did Richard take it away from me. Why? Why had he done such a thing? I only married Clive to make him happy.
Everyone did Richard Limerickâs bidding. Even me.
Yes, I fancied myself in love with Richard once. So deeply in love that I gave him my everything, even my innocence. My mother called me a fool. To her mind, a womanâs God-given virtue, her virginity, was the most powerful weapon she owned. Love had nothing to do with marriage; a woman who surrendered her virtue without the security of marriage was a fool. How sheâd known, I could not say. My mother had a sixth sense about me. Sheâd been relieved when Clive proposed. She assumed heâd been the one responsible for my deflowering. She treated him with cool disdain until her death a year later.
My mother had been right. I was a fool of the highest order. Yet I had believed I loved Richard. Strange to believe that I, Annabelle Powell, now Annabelle Limerick would abandon my motherâs teachings for an older man who never had any intention on marrying me. He was too sophisticated and worldly to do something as mundane as divorce Anna. I suspected Anna knew Richard had his favorites. Young favorites. Handsome, debonair, and intelligent, Richard knew how to please a woman. I never expected that. Never. I would have willingly been his forever. Quietly. Secretly. Living a semi-scandalous life under my motherâs disapproving eye but it was not to be. He dallied with me a few times but then moved on to a young maid in his own home.
Richard had other plans for me. He wanted me to marry his son. Heâd chosen me explicitly for him. But as in all things, Richard had to have me first. It was a grotesque competition between the two men. Clive never had a chance of winning at life. Never had a chance at getting one over on his father. All things were under Richard Limerickâs power and knowing this, I now hated him with all my being.
But I never imagined that Richard would tell Clive about our affair.
There had been no reason to do so.
